What is a Sober Curious Coach?

You’re not an alcoholic. You haven’t hit a rock bottom. But something isn’t feeling right about your relationship with alcohol. There’s a quiet voice inside that keeps questioning if your drinking is a problem, but the idea of sobriety is a bit scary. Everyone around you is drinking. Your drinking isn’t causing any big problems. But you can’t stop thinking about it.

This is where a sober curious coach comes in. Not as a judge, not as an enforcer. Just a compassionate guide that can help you along your unique journey.

Things a sober curious coach is NOT:

  • AA

  • A therapist

  • A one-size-fits-all solution or program

  • Forcing sobriety

  • Judging your choices

What a sober curious coach actually does:

Imagine having a compassionate ally who walks you through your sober curious journey? Someone to talk to about your thoughts, beliefs, and fears - all without any judgement or pressure. That’s a sober curious coach! There’s no pressure to quit cold turkey and white knuckle your way through forever, or shaming you for your drinking habits.

The main intent of a sober curious coach is to guide you towards a mindful and intentional approach in your relationship with alcohol. Each coach has their own methodology, and it’s important to find a coach whose practice resonates with you.

My approach:

In my practice, I’ve developed a two-phase approach to empower you from the inside out.

Phase One: Awareness

We start by shining a light on your relationship with alcohol. We’ll dive deep into uncovering your underlying beliefs, habits, and triggers that shape your drinking patterns. Then we’ll gently examine the thoughts and narratives that keep you stuck in these patterns. By identifying these insights, we can challenge and reframe them

Phase Two: Activating Change

Once we’ve gained clarity, it’s time to move into action. I don’t believe in using pure willpower to stop or reduce drinking. Instead, we’ll work to understand your true motivation for wanting to change - your WHY. Then we’ll work together to:

  • Develop new coping mechanisms that actually work for you

  • Create mindset shifts that support your unique goals

  • Implement practical tools for emotional regulation and stress relief

  • Set personalized goals that make sense for you

  • Have ongoing support and accountability

Who needs a sober curious coach?

You don’t have to be an alcoholic to have a difficult time quitting drinking. Alcohol is everywhere. It’s a huge part of our culture, embedded in nearly every gathering, event, and tradition. It is usually assumed that you drink, and is the only substance that you have to explain NOT using. Needless to say, going about a sober curious journey on your own can be overwhelming.

Especially for moms. Juggling a career, motherhood, and keeping your own identity in this fast-paced, high-pressure society is HARD. Using alcohol to cope with this stress is normalized and encouraged by society. It’s so easy to slip into a nightly routine of drinking a glass of wine while mindlessly scrolling as a way to decompress and disconnect.

But if you’re drinking too much, then the blame is placed on you. Alcohol maintains its unvilified status - despite being a highly marketed addictive substance. And if you become sober, people assume that you are an alcoholic. While the tide is turning, and more and more people are drinking less by choice (WAY TO GO GEN Z!) - it’s still commonplace for people to assume sobriety is for alcoholics.

All of this makes quitting way more complicated! It’s easy to question yourself along the way. This is where having a guide along your sober curious journey is so helpful. You can work through the doubts and confusion, and keep confidently on your path.

Your journey, your choice

Sober curious coaching isn’t about forcing change or assigning labels. It’s about helping you to understand what truly matters to you, and forging the best path to get there. Choosing to drink less or not at all is a powerful choice you make in order to live your healthiest, best life - and it’s a brave choice in a society that glorifies alcohol.
